Meg Soper has developed into a leading motivational comedian by combining the insights and experiences gained over the last twenty years pursuing dual careers as a registered nurse and stand up comedienne. A veteran stand-up performer, she got her start at various comedy clubs across Canada, and over the years performed with many leading comedy acts including Ray Romano and Ellen Degeneres. Her diverse content has been shaped by her experiences as a staff nurse and later as an operating room nurse in major urban teaching hospitals and regional health care facilities. As a health care professional she recognized that there was a place for humour in the corporate setting. And so she decided to combine her talents as a comic with her workplace experience to inspire people to improve communication, deal with stress, achieve better balance in their lives while establishing a healthy workplace and homelife.
Meg’s emergence as a leading workplace motivational humourist was inspired by her ability to make people laugh. She saw how laughter could alter attitudes and help people cope in difficult situations. It was out of the pressure packed environment of the hospital operating room and balancing two careers that Meg came to realize that humour offered one of the most effective means for dealing with stress and difficult situations.
As a nurse comedienne, or “Funny Nurse” as she is known to many, Meg combines humour with inspiration to motivate and entertain her audiences. Her unique brand of motivational comedy is “humour with a heart”. Based in Oakville, Ontario, Meg has a large following in the health care community throughout the province, Canada and North America. She has gone from a much sought after motivational speaker in Toronto who is brought in as an M.C., opening or closing keynote speaker and motivational comedian to energize many events and conventions to working across the country and internationally.
In 1999 together with close friend Ann Morrison, she co- founded Comic Vision, an annual national five city comedy tour that raises funds and awareness for the Foundation Fighting Blindness. The idea was inspired by Ann’s son who is the same age as Meg’s son who was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a degenerative disease of the retina. Some of Canada’s top performing comedians gather in cities across the country to bring laughter to audiences and raise funds to support research for the Foundation Fighting Blindness in hopes of developing a cure for eye disease. Comic Vision has gone on to raise over a 1.5 million dollars and is evidence that humour can make a difference.
In 2006 Meg co-authored the book, Expert Women Who Speak … Speak Out (volume 6), a collaborative work of women professional speakers, trainers, and coaches. Comedienne Meg Soper has appeared on the CBC Television network, Women’s Television network and Prime TV, as well as being featured in many radio and comedy festivals.
It all comes down to choices. There is always a choice about how you do your work, even if there is not a choice about the work itself. You choose the attitude you bring with you to work or life. That attitude dictates whether any given day will be good or bad. How you react to a situation is totally up to you. If you have the ability to step back from a situation and see the humour in it, you quickly realize that life can be less stressful. Humour melts stress!
